The Bakersfield Californian published an insightful editorial yesterday titled “County cuts will go deeper than dollars.” Its message: Even “non-mission critical” programs, such as libraries, positively impact the community in a way that is difficult to measure strictly in dollars and cents.
The Senate Appropriations Committee just moved AB 155 by Assembly Member Tony Mendoza from the Suspense File to the Senate Floor on a 6-4 vote. A pioneering and long time California County Administrator, George Gaekle passed away Monday at his home in Modesto. George was the first County Administrative Officer in Butte County, appointed by the Board of Supervisors in 1953 and serving to 1967. He was appointed Stanislaus CAO in 1968 serving until his retirement in 1979.
Anything can happen in Appropriations Committee and we experienced a couple of twists today when AB 155 (Mendoza) was heard.
The SF Chronicle today recommended San Mateo County Supervisor Rich Gordon in the race to fill the AD 21 seat and in doing so recognized Supervisor Gordon’s prior role as President of CSAC.
